ATM is seen by many users today as a solution to networks with bandwidth limitation. Therefore, it is necessary to determine the amount of communication bandwidth actually available to applications rather than raw network bandwidth. In order to determine ATM’s bandwidth between applications, we studied the performance of an ATM LAN based on Fore Systems’ hardware. This was achieved by emulating both memory-based and disk-based transfer over TCP/IP/ATM and the Fore Systems’ API/ATM protocols. Varying parameters such as the type of AAL, the size of the maximum transmission unit and the network configuration, allowed us to determine their effect on application bandwidth as well as cell loss and bottlenecks.
